At age eight she journeyed to Europe to study music in Vienna and dance in Paris. Palmer made her debut in Baltimore at age twelve. During the course of her twenties she gained great popularity and toured throughout the U.S., where a cigar was named after her. Palmer's first performance in England was in 1883.
