Henry Irving (1838-1905) was one of the great actors of the 19th century and the first ever to be knighted (1895). His acting partner for 24 years was Ellen Terry; he played the brooding introvert and she the spontaneous charmer. In 1878 Irving began his own company, which was a tremendous success for many years. But he became sick in 1897 and could barely keep the Lyceum Theatre going. At 68, destitute, he died.
