Titled in the mount 'Marie tempest in the 'Fencing Master' with Sarony's photographic logo. Dame Marie Tempest (1864-1942), whose real name was Mary Susan Etherington, trained as a singer and then began performing in musical comedy. After her success in London she toured the world as Kitty in 'The Marriage of Kitty' (1902). Noel Coward wrote the part of Judith Bliss in 'Hay Fever' (1925) especially for her. Tempest was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1937.
