Jessie Bartlett Davis (1861-1905) was a contralto and operetta star. Born in Illinois, the daughter of well known musicians, her stage debut was in 1880 in Gilbert and Sullivan's 'HMS Pinafore.' She belonged to the Bostonian Light Opera company. Davis was best known for her performance of Alan-a-Dale in the operetta, 'Robin Hood.' In that role she was the first ever to sing the famous song 'Oh Promise Me,' at the 'Robin Hood' premiere on June 9, 1890. Davis immediately recorded the song. In 1903, at the Casino Theatre in New York, Davis performed in the revival of the operetta 'Erminie.'
